HC-SR501

This page is about the Amazon buy "DAOKAI® 5PCS New HC SR501 einstellen IR pyroelektrische Infrarot PIR Bewegungs Sensor Detektor Modul". The HC-SR501 is a pyroelectric infrared detector (PIR) sensor.

1. About the PIR sensor

The HC-SR501 is a pyroelectric infrared detector. The main component is the BISS0001 PIR controller. The voltage is provided through diode (probably 1N4148) followed by a 3.3 V linear regulator HT7133 with a voltage drop of 100 mV. Thus, I would use a minimum supply voltage of 4.1 V, and 3.4 V if I shorten the diode. A absolute maximum supply voltage is specified by 24 V in the datasheet of the HT7133.

The HC-SR50 gives 0 V at the Out pin if no heat source is moving in front of the sensor. If a heat source is moving in front of the sensor, the output pin voltage changes to 3.3 V.

2. Configure the sensor

The sensor output changes from low (0 V) to high (3.3 V) if motion was detected. The behavior of the output pin when changing back from 3.3 V to 0 V is determinated by the mode jumper and the hold time potentiometer. Therefore, the module can be configured to the single mode or to continuous mode by the jumper.

In continuous mode pulses are given as long as a heat source is moving in front of the sensor. However, in the single mode the output pin will be hold for a time defined by the "hold time potentiometer" and changes back to 0 V after approximately 3 seconds. Increase the hold time by turning the potentiometer clockwise up to 5 minutes. The minimum time is 3 seconds.

Further, the seconds potentiometer decreases the sensitivity of the sensor by turning it clockwise (to the right). A high sensitivity can cause false alarms. At low sensitivity events could be missed and the detection range might be shorter.

3. Power consubtion

The best thing about the HC-SR501 is the power consumption of 50 µA according to the data sheet. I have measured 40 µA for my module while the module was waiting for heat sources. After a heat source was detected I have measured 200 µA.
