HC-SR501

The HC-SR501 is a pyroelectric infrared detector. The main component is the BISS0001 PIR controller. The voltage is provided through diode (probably 1N4148) followed by a 3.3 V linear regulator Spannungsregler HT7133 with a voltage drop of 100 mV. Thus, I would use a minimum supply voltage of 4.1 V, and 3.4 V if I shorten the diode. A absolute maximum supply voltage is specified by 24 V in the datasheet of the HT7133.

The HC-SR50 gives 0 V at the Out pin if no heat source is moving in front of the sensor. If a heat source is moving in front of the sensor, the Out voltage changes to 3.3 V for a time defined by the "hold time potentiometer". The can by modified sensitivity by a second potentiometer. A high sensitivity can cause false alarms. At low sensitivity events could be missed.

Further, the module can be changed from single to continuous mode by a jumper. In continuous mode pulses are given as long as a heat source is moving in front of the sensor.

The best thing about the HC-SR501 is the power consumption of 50 µA according to the data sheet. I have measured 40 µA for my module while the module was waiting for heat sources. After a heat source was detected I have measured 200 µA.
